NORTHWEST

The schooner NORTHWEST sank on October 24, 1876, after colliding with the schooner F.L. DANFORTH off Racine. The NORTHWEST was carrying a cargo of 30,000 bushels of corn from Chicago to Buffalo at the time of the accident. The crew of the NORTHWEST were rescued by the DANFORTH, which sustained minimal damage. The NORTHWEST was owned by Captain W. M. Egan and Captain Cal Carr of Chicago and was valued at $15,000, insured for $10,000. It was a well-known and fast-sailing vessel, measuring 458 tons, and had a successful career until its tragic loss. Legal action was taken against the DANFORTH by Hon. Wiley M. Egan for damages amounting to $16,300.
