  • GEORGE MURRAY

The schooner GEORGE, formerly known as GEORGE MURRAY, was a vessel with a gross capacity of 1,300 tons and valued at $25,000. On October 15, 1893, it stranded on Lake Superior near Parisian Island during a NW gale. The crew was rescued, but the vessel broke up and became a total loss. It was owned by Roberts and Fox of Marblehead and was loaded with coal for Marquette at the time of the incident. The schooner was built in 1873 and measured 202.8 feet in length, 34.4 feet in beam, and 13.8 feet in depth. There are conflicting reports about its exact location after the stranding, with one report mentioning seeing its topmast head above water four miles above Parisian Island and another report stating it was lying between Parisian Island and the mainland.
