NEW ORLEANS 1906

On June 30, 1906, the steam screw NEW ORLEANS collided with the steam screw WILLIAM H. LINN near Thunder Bay, Michigan. The collision resulted in the sinking of the NEW ORLEANS. Fortunately, all 16 persons on board were able to survive the incident, although they had to scramble for their lives from the sinking vessel. The crew members had to climb over the rails of the sinking ship and some were blinded by the steam before they were rescued. The wreck of the NEW ORLEANS was later located off Thunder Bay lighthouse, with part of the stern visible but the bow submerged under water.
