Strong & Hart, along with other partners, owned the vessel, with its home port registered in Detroit, Michigan.
On June 22, 1853, the CHALLENGE embarked on a journey from Chicago to Buffalo. However, tragedy struck when a sudden boiler explosion occurred, blowing off the ship’s stern and causing it to catch fire. The vessel quickly sank in Lake Huron, leaving little time for the crew and passengers to escape. Five lives were lost in the disaster, including three deckhands, a young man who was working his passage, and an unidentified passenger from Mackinac.
The survivors of the CHALLENGE’s crew and passengers found themselves adrift in lifeboats, desperately awaiting rescue. Fortunately, the schooner NORTH STAR, located around 10 miles away, heard the explosion and rushed to their aid. The survivors were picked up by the NORTH STAR, which then transferred them to the propeller BUCEPHALUS. They were finally brought to safety in Detroit.
The CHALLENGE was carrying a significant cargo at the time of the explosion. It included barrelled pork, oats, highwines, and hams. Unfortunately, the cargo was lost along with the vessel. The total property loss, including the ship and cargo, amounted to $41,894, making it a devastating financial blow.
