The ship was bound from Chicago to Buffalo with a cargo of flaxseed. The tug ANNA P. DORR was sent to assist the CROSTHWAITE and towed her to Buffalo. The extent of the injuries required about $2,000 for repairs. The vessel was owned by Mr. John Kelderhouse and Captain McIlvee, and it had a home port in Sandusky, Ohio. The ship was listed in the Merchant Vessel List of the U.S. as having a gross tonnage of 673.20 tons and a net tonnage of 639.54 tons. It was built in East Saginaw, Michigan, in the year 1873.
