LUCINDA VAN VALKENBURG U14614

The schooner LUCINDA VAN VALKENBURG had U.S. Registry number 14614. It was built in 1862 at Tonawanda, New York, and had a gross tonnage of 301.66 tons and a net tonnage of 286.58 tons. The vessel was owned by T. Hood and had its home port in Chicago, Illinois. On June 1, 1887, the schooner sank on Lake Huron with a cargo of coal and became a total loss. The property loss on the hull was $5,000, and the loss on the cargo was $2,000. The sinking occurred due to a collision with the propeller LEHIGH, which struck the schooner on the port side forward of the fore-rigging. Fortunately, the crew was safely taken aboard the LEHIGH and brought to Port Huron. The masts of the sunken schooner were later removed by the revenue cutter FESSENDEN to prevent them from being an obstruction to navigation.
