MINNEAPOLIS

The steamer MINNEAPOLIS, owned by Parker and Millen of Detroit, sank in the Straits of Mackinac on April 4, 1894. She was crushed by ice and went down in 20 fathoms of water. The crew managed to escape and were rescued by her consort, SAN DIEGO. They were later transferred to the tug FAVORITE, which brought them to Cheboygan. The MINNEAPOLIS was a wooden propeller built in 1873 at Marine City, Michigan, with a net tonnage of 950 tons. She was carrying a cargo of 48,517 bushels of wheat from Chicago to Buffalo at the time of the disaster. The vessel and cargo were a total loss.
