The vessel was constructed in 1888 at West Bay City, Michigan, and its home port was Chicago, Illinois. With dimensions of 287.6 feet in length, 40.0 feet in width, and 23.6 feet in depth, the barge was engaged in freight service and had an indicated horsepower of 900.

On September 22, 1917, the WILLIAM P. REND sank at Alpena, Michigan, becoming a total loss. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident, ensuring the safety of the crew members on board. Interestingly, the barge was formerly known as the steam screw GEORGE G. HADLEY before being renamed.
