On 1 May 1871, the bark MAITLAND, which was loaded with grain, collided with the schooner GOLDEN HARVEST in the Straits (presumably referring to the Straits of Mackinac in the Great Lakes region). After the initial collision, the MAITLAND was immediately struck by the schooner MEARS, causing it to sink. The incident resulted in the total loss of the MAITLAND.
