Vessel Type Description

The Unidentified Sunken Boat is a modern pleasure craft likely utilized for recreational purposes. Its design suggests suitability for short trips, cruising, fishing, or other leisure activities. While it lacks the historical significance of older shipwrecks, its presence under the water offers an intriguing dive experience due to its relatively recent vintage and the unexpected nature of its discovery.

History

The boat was discovered during a Canadian Harvard Aircraft Recovery Team mission in the summer of 2021. The operation aimed to locate a missing aircraft south of Toronto Island, using advanced sonar equipment and a Zodiac boat provided by Shark Marine Technologies Inc.

During the survey, an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) detected an unusual object on the lakebed. Upon sending divers to confirm the discovery, the team identified the object as a sunken pleasure boat. Though not the historic aircraft the team sought, the boat added an element of intrigue to their expedition.

Final Disposition

The wreck of the pleasure boat rests at the bottom of Lake Ontario. Its current condition appears intact, attributed to its recent construction and submersion timeline. It remains undisturbed, adding to the collection of dive sites in the Toronto Island area.

Current Condition & Accessibility

The wreck is situated within recreational diving depths, making it an accessible site for divers equipped with proper training and experience. Its known position, thanks to sonar imaging, facilitates access for exploration. The modern nature of the boat provides a unique dive experience for those interested in contemporary wrecks and recent maritime activity.
