MILWAUKEE River Barge. This vessel, which sailed the waters from 1872 to 1883, witnessed a series of events that left an indelible mark on its history. Join us as we explore its journey, providing updated insights into its construction, voyages, and unfortunate fate.

The MILWAUKEE River Barge boasted impressive dimensions, measuring 385 tons gross and 352 tons register, with a length of 147.6′. It possessed a remarkable capacity of 22,000 bushels, making it an essential vessel for transporting goods. Constructed by J.B. Auger in Montreal in 1872, it swiftly embarked on its maritime endeavors.

Throughout its active years, the barge underwent various valuations. In 1874, it was rated at 1 and valued at $10,500. However, by 1878, its value had decreased to $6,500. In 1880, it faced further depreciation, reaching a value of $3,000, which remained unchanged in 1883.

The first notable event in the barge’s chronicles occurred on June 6, 1876, when it struck a shoal and grounded in the Alexandria Bay narrows in New York. At the time, it carried a cargo of 21,500 bushels of corn, of which 16,000 were unfortunately damaged. Despite this setback, the barge was successfully refloated and towed to Kingston, Ontario, two days later, thanks to the assistance of the tug LADY FRANKLIN.

In 1880, the MILWAUKEE River Barge underwent repairs and received new bilges, ensuring its continued operation. However, tragedy struck on November 10, 1883, as it foundered between Main Duck Island and Galoo Island near Kingston. During its passage from Charlotte (Rochester), New York, to Montreal, carrying 550 tons of coal, the barge met its unfortunate demise. It was being towed by the Montreal Transportation Co. tug DAVID G. THOMSON, alongside the Montreal Transportation Co. barge SENATOR. Reports on the number of lives lost vary, with estimates ranging from four to seven.
