The Trade Wind, a barkentine built in 1853, was constructed in Stoney Creek, New York. This wooden-hulled vessel featured three masts and had a tonnage of 366 based on the old measurement style.

Unfortunately, the Trade Wind met its final fate on November 30, 1854, near Long Point in Lake Erie. The vessel was involved in a collision with the brig Charles Napier. The Trade Wind was carrying a cargo consisting of railroad iron, stoves, and lifeboats at the time of the collision. The collision resulted in the sinking of the Trade Wind and the loss of the vessel, as well as its cargo.

Prior to this incident, the Trade Wind had already experienced another collision. On October 6, 1853, it collided with the schooner Citizen off Barcelona in Lake Erie. This earlier collision added to the vessel’s history of maritime accidents.

In terms of ownership, in 1854, the Trade Wind was owned by H. Walker & Company, based in Buffalo. The ship had changed hands from its original construction, and it was under this ownership when it encountered its tragic end.

The collision between the Trade Wind and the Charles Napier on November 29, 1854, took place during a severe snowstorm. Despite the challenging conditions, the crew of the Trade Wind managed to survive the ordeal. They found themselves in a precarious situation, but their survival instincts and resilience prevailed. Utilizing two government lifeboats that were part of their cargo, the crew climbed into these lifeboats to escape the sinking ship. It took them a couple of days drifting on the open waters before they finally reached the safety of the shore.

The incident serves as a testament to the dangers faced by sailors during their voyages in harsh weather conditions. The crew’s ability to navigate such adversity and ultimately save themselves from the sinking ship highlights the courage and resourcefulness of seafarers in the face of perilous situations.
