The Abbey, also known as Abby, was a wooden schooner that was built in 1847 by Ambrose Morgan in Oswego, New York. The vessel had a weight of 117 tons.

Tragically, the Abbey met its demise on October 5, 1851, near Black River, Ohio, in Lake Erie. The loss occurred during a storm. Although the vessel was wrecked and stranded ashore, there were no reported fatalities.

At the time of the incident, the Abbey was carrying a cargo of coal. The total loss, including the vessel and its cargo, was estimated at $3,500. The Abbey was owned by H. Matthews and operated out of Oswego.

Interestingly, the Abbey had also been involved in another wreck earlier that year. On January 1, 1851, it was wrecked near Sodus, New York.

The information about the Abbey’s loss and its involvement in the incidents can be found in casualty lists from 1851 and private papers belonging to Erik Hyle. The property loss from the wreck near Cleveland was reported as $3,500 in the Disasters on the Lakes in 1851 article published in the Buffalo Commercial Advertiser on January 2, 1852.
