E.S. CATLIN U36325

The E.S. CATLIN was a schooner-barge built in 1869 in Crosthwaite, Bangor, Michigan. It had the dimensions of 152 feet in length, 28 feet in beam, and 9.1 feet in depth. The barge had a gross tonnage of 372 and a net tonnage of 360. It was primarily used for transporting lumber.

On October 5, 1876, the E.S. CATLIN was lost during a storm on Lake Erie. It was part of a tow led by the tug BALIZE, which was bound from Bay City to Buffalo with lumber. When the tug attempted to seek shelter in Vermilion Harbor, the CATLIN was let go and subsequently stranded. Another storm on October 17 caused the barge to break up and be scattered along the shore, approximately 5 miles east of Ashtabula, Ohio.

There were no reported losses of life associated with the incident. The CATLIN was owned by William Crosthwaite of Buffalo and had the official number 36325. Prior to its loss, the barge had also sunk in the Saginaw River near Bay City, Michigan, in May of the same year.
