CASPIAN: The Ill-Fated Sidewheel Steamer Lost on Lake Erie
Lake Erie, known for its unpredictable weather and treacherous conditions, has claimed numerous vessels throughout history. As heavy rain poured and winds intensified, the lake’s agitated waters grew increasingly violent. Despite attempts to secure the vessel, the CASPIAN was torn from its moorings and slammed into the piers, causing severe damage. In the spring of 1853, portions of the wreck were salvaged, including machinery and structural elements. However, the hull of the CASPIAN proved beyond repair and was subsequently flattened using dynamite. The salvaged engine found new life in other vessels, being transferred to the E.K. COLLINS, then later to the PLANET and NORTHWEST.
