The Alva B. was a propeller vessel with the official U.S. Number 106738. It had a gross tonnage of 83 and was built in 1890. The vessel was initially sunk by the steamer City of Detroit in Cleveland, Ohio in 1898 but was later raised and repaired.

In 1899, the Alva B. came under the ownership of the Great Lakes Towing Company in Cleveland, Ohio. By 1914, it was owned by H.S. Kerbaugh, Inc. in Buffalo, New York, and in 1917, it was owned by the American Towing Company, also based in Buffalo.

On November 1, 1917, the Alva B. stranded 22 miles west of Cleveland, Ohio, in Lake Erie. Fortunately, all eight persons on board survived, but the vessel was deemed a total loss. It eventually foundered on November 8, 1917.

Information about the Alva B. can be found in the Union Dry Dock and Buffalo Shipbuilding Master List of the Institute for Great Lakes Research in Perrysburg, Ohio.
