Wreck Location Map
Vessel Type
A steam-powered tug from Duluth’s prominent Inman fleet, the Pathfinder was built for harbor towing operations. Details on her construction are limited in surviving records.
Description
The Pathfinder, a Duluth-based steam tug owned by Inman Tug Line, capsized on 1 September 1895 after colliding with tug Medina while jockeying to tow the steamer Joliet. The tragic incident claimed the life of the fireman, led to legal action against the tug masters, and resulted in license revocations. The vessel was salvaged, rebuilt, and later re-entered service.
History
While vying for the tow of the steamer Joliet in Duluth’s St. Louis Bay, the Inman tug Pathfinder aggressively jockeyed with the rival tug Medina—owned by the Singer line. The competition led to a serious collision when Pathfinder‘s towline snagged under the bow of Joliet, causing Pathfinder to capsize. Tragically, the fireman drowned. Both tug masters were arrested and subsequently lost their licenses following the incident.
Significant Incidents
- Collision with tug Medina while competing for the tow of the steamer Joliet.
- Fireman drowned during the capsizing.
- Legal action against both tug masters, resulting in license revocations.
Final Disposition
Shortly after capsizing, Pathfinder was recovered, rebuilt, and returned to service—though the tragic fireman’s death and legal repercussions had lasting impact on her crew roster.
Current Condition & Accessibility
Not applicable—this was not a wreck but a collision accident; the vessel survived and remained operational after reconstruction.
