Vessel Type
Unconfirmed, believed to be timber canal barges or service scows.
Description
This site consists of three distinct wrecks, visible in historic aerial photographs and pond drainage documentation. Two of the wrecks are now believed to be buried beneath the expanded landfill of Henley Island.
History
The site may represent a deliberate scuttling ground for obsolete vessels after the Third Canal fell out of use. As the pond transitioned to recreational use, vessels were often left in situ or buried to reinforce shorelines. Aerial photographs from 1955 and 1965 confirm the presence of three large hulls, each approximately 50-55 meters in length, making this one of the largest composite sites in Martindale Pond.
Significant Incidents
- No casualties recorded.
Final Disposition
The vessels were likely abandoned pre-1955, possibly scuttled and later buried by landfill and shoreline reclamation. Currently, one wreck may be accessible, while two are considered fully buried. The site is non-divable unless sediment shifts or excavation occurs.
Current Condition & Accessibility
The remaining visible outline of the wrecks is likely submerged under silt just off the southern edge of Henley Island. Future drone or magnetic surveys may help outline the third visible hull.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT
This site, now partially buried beneath Henley Island’s infill, may represent a deliberate barge scuttling ground used post-canal service. As the Third Canal fell out of use and the pond’s recreational transformation began, obsolete vessels were frequently left in situ or buried to reinforce shorelines.
The 1955 and 1965 photographs confirm the presence of three large hulls — each approximately 50–55 meters in length — making this one of the largest composite sites in Martindale Pond. Two of the three are now assumed to be completely buried beneath Henley Island’s modern footprint.
FINAL DISPOSITION
- Date of Abandonment: Pre-1955
- How: Likely scuttled and later buried by landfill and shoreline reclamation
- Condition: One potentially accessible; two considered fully buried
- Diving Status: Non-divable unless future sediment shift or excavation occurs; drone or magnetic survey may yield outline of third visible hull
