Take a moment to check out these images of the KYLE SPANGLER, a two-masted wooden schooner that sank off the coast of Presque Isle in 1860 after colliding with another schooner.
Archaeologists use a handful of techniques to document shipwreck sites.
A site plan requires measurements and some underwater drawing and note taking, whereas a photo mosaic is made by taking lots of photos and piecing them together.
Both of these tools help everyone understand, visualize, and experience shipwrecks like the SPANGLER without having to dive 130 feet into Lake Huron to experience it themselves. They can really help bring history to life!
