New 3D Shipwreck Model Added: Unidentified Tug (WHS Tug 3), Lake Michigan

This site represents the second of several small wrecks discovered during a NOAA survey of the Milwaukee region and is the last of these newly found wrecks documented during our 2025 field season. While much about the vessel’s identity and history remains unknown, the wreck itself is exceptionally informative.

We’re pleased to announce the addition of a newly documented shipwreck to the 3DShipwrecks.org database: an unidentified wooden steam tug, informally known as WHS Tug 3, located in Lake Michigan off the Milwaukee area.

This site represents the second of several small wrecks discovered during a NOAA survey of the Milwaukee region and is the last of these newly found wrecks documented during our 2025 field season. While much about the vessel’s identity and history remains unknown, the wreck itself is exceptionally informative.

About the Wreck

The site appears to be a harbor tug approximately 76 feet in length, likely sunk or deliberately scuttled. Although the hull sides are badly broken, much of the structure remains visible on the lakebed, including the bottom of the hull, substantial portions of the port side, elements of the starboard side, and a curved transom section.

One of the most significant aspects of this wreck is the survival of its propulsion system, which remains in situ and includes:

  • A firebox boiler
  • A single-expansion steam engine
  • Propeller shaft and propeller

The rudder is not visible and may be missing or buried beneath hull debris. The wreck lies in approximately 103 feet (31 meters) of water.

3D Documentation

The newly released 3D model was created from 1,238 high-resolution images (30 megapixels each) captured by Andrew Goodman, with field support from Kendra Kennedy, during the 2025 season. The resulting model provides a detailed, non-invasive record of the wreck’s current condition and layout, supporting research, education, and long-term preservation.

Collaboration & Support

This project was completed through a collaboration between the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Preservation Society (GLSPS). We gratefully acknowledge the Racine Lighthouse and Maritime Preservation Society, whose gift funding made this work possible.

As with all sites documented on 3DShipwrecks.org, this project reflects a commitment to no-touch, non-invasive documentation. These digital records allow us to study and share maritime heritage while leaving the wrecks themselves undisturbed for future generations.
