Amherst Island, Lake Ontario
135′ wooden schooner | 5 lives lost | Cargo: Feldspar | Depth: 90 ft (28m)
3D model available – see below!
One of the best-preserved wooden schooners in Lake Ontario – the City of Sheboygan is an absolute must for seasoned divers. She sank on Sept 26, 1915, overloaded with feldspar and overwhelmed by a Lake Ontario gale. The captain, his wife, and three others were lost as residents on Amherst Island watched helplessly from shore.
Discovered in the 1960s, the wreck sits upright, spars and windlass in place, her nameboard recovered and now on display at the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes. The hull, deck, and even cargo hatches are still intact. Masts lie across the deck, and there’s a cook’s stove, deadeyes, and tools still scattered across the site.
She is a true underwater museum, a cold, silent time capsule of Great Lakes history.
This is a deep dive (~90-105 ft). Drysuits, good lights, and proper trim are non-negotiable. Thermoclines are real. Respect the wreck – leave only bubbles, take only photos.
