We’re excited to share a brand-new digital model from 3D Shipwrecks: the steam tug Tacoma, one of Chicago’s most intact tugwrecks.

Built in 1894 at Benton Harbor, MI, Tacoma served the Fitzsimmons & Connell Dock & Dredge Co. of Chicago for 35 years. On November 4, 1929, she sprang a leak during a storm near the 68th Street crib, forcing her crew of six to abandon ship. The tug sank in just 30 feet of water—fortunately, all hands survived.

Today, the wreck of Tacoma lies near Clark Shoal, Lake Michigan, where divers continue to document her remarkable preservation. Much of her machinery—including her double expansion steam engine, Scotch boiler, propeller, rudder, and towing bitts—remains in place.

The new 3D photogrammetric model was created from 1,112 high-resolution images shot in a single DPV dive during the 2025 season. This virtual model allows anyone to explore the tug in incredible detail, even if you can’t dive the site yourself.
