New 3D Model Release – Henry Chisholm & Cumberland Site Completed (2024)

We’re excited to share the latest 3D model release by our trusted partners at 3DShipwrecks.org, showcasing an impressively detailed scan of the 204-foot side-wheeler Cumberland and the 270-foot steam barge Henry Chisholm.

The Cumberland, a wooden passenger and freight vessel outfitted in elegant style, met its end on July 24, 1877. En route from Fort William to Duluth in dense fog, it struck a reef unmarked on Canadian charts. Despite the efforts of salvage tugs, the vessel could not be freed, and a fall storm broke it to pieces.

The Henry Chisholm was, at the time of its 1880 launch, the largest steam barge ever built in Cleveland. Reinforced with iron and steel strapping, it grounded on Rock of Ages shoal while searching for its lost barge in heavy seas. It was never recovered.

This new model, composed of 16,559 high-resolution images (30 and 50 MP) captured by Brian Bosveld and Andrew Goodman under Isle Royale Research Permit during the 2024 dive season, is the most complete rendering of the site to date. It effectively ties the long-standing work on the Chisholm wreck into a singular, immersive experience.

Incredible work once again from the 3DShipwrecks.org team. This model represents years of cumulative effort, and it’s a critical resource for wreck documentation, research, and diver orientation.
