Site Description

Bracebridge Falls is a notable urban waterfall located in downtown Bracebridge, Ontario, at the confluence of the north and south branches of the Muskoka River. The site features a partially dammed cascade spilling over granite bedrock, offering unique topographical interest and swift current zones. Though not traditionally a scuba destination, the basin and surrounding flow areas are occasionally explored by experienced local divers under safe conditions.

Conditions on Dive Day

Water Temperature: Approx. 13°C (55°F)
Visibility: ~10 ft (3 m); noted to be clearer than usual due to favourable weather and low boat traffic
Current: Moderate to strong near the falls

Entry & Exit

Entry and exit can be made via the roadside access near the Silver Bridge on Entrance Drive. Divers should exercise extreme caution near the base of the falls and avoid direct entry under cascading water due to strong hydraulics and debris.

Hazards

  • Strong currents near and downstream from the falls
  • Debris and reduced visibility during high flow conditions
  • Potential boat traffic downstream

Emergency & Dive Support

Emergency: Call 911 (Muskoka Emergency Services)
Nearest Hospital: South Muskoka Memorial Hospital (75 Ann St, Bracebridge)
Permits: No known permit required for surface or snorkeling observation; scuba diving not officially designated—proceed at own risk and responsibility.

Notes

Due to its urban setting, Bracebridge Falls is more commonly appreciated as a sightseeing location rather than a dive site. However, trained divers familiar with swift water conditions may find interest in its rocky basin and river confluence. Divers must remain downstream and away from the hydraulic zones.
