Finding Carl’s Wreck – August 9th Discovery in the St. Lawrence

By: Daniel J. Gildea & Carl | Date: 9 August 2025
On a warm summer day, August 9, 2025, what began as an ordinary fishing trip turned into a notable underwater find. Daniel J. Gildea and his friend Carl were casting near Kring Point State Park when an unusual sonar return caught their attention. A long, slender object appeared beside a rock shoal, measuring roughly 16 feet in length. Curiosity got the better of them, and they marked the coordinates: 44°22.756′ N, 75°51.974′ W.
The ROV Descent
Later that day, they returned with an ROV. As the camera sank to the bottom — about 42 feet (12.8 m) — the shape of a bow rider pleasure boat came into focus. The hull was broken in two, stripped of its motor, seats, and most dashboard gauges. Large rocks in the stern pointed to an intentional sinking, with the vessel’s anchor lying upstream. https://www.youtube.com/embed/DNPWhfvryKY

Why Sink a Boat Here?
While the motive remains unclear, such scuttlings often involve avoiding disposal fees or concealing damage. Without identifying marks, the boat’s origin is still a mystery. For now, it rests silently on the riverbed, unmarked on most navigation charts.
