Description & Context

Rudder: Keel-hung, unbalanced wooden rudder built on a heavy oak stock with multiple planks through-bolted and strapped with iron. Approx. 3–4 ft wide and 12–15 ft high (c. 1–1.2 m × 4–4.5 m), carrying 4–5 sets of pintles and gudgeons on the aft face of the sternpost. Upper end of the stock originally connected to an internal steering quadrant and wheel via chain and wire rope. On the wreck today, the rudder [description of observed state: e.g., “remains upright hard-over to port, with lower pintle and gudgeon still in place”].
