Varuna – Kingston ON

Associated Wreck / Site: Varuna

Location: Kingston, Ontario

Date documented: 2010

Photographer / Surveyor: Tom Rutledge/Chris McMullen

Description & Context

The bow is mostly intact in outline but heavily collapsed and silted in:

  • The stempost is still standing, forming the sharp leading edge of the bow.
  • The bow planking and outer hull are present but eroded; edges are softened and broken, with timbers encrusted and covered in growth.
  • Just aft of the stem there’s a cross-beam/breasthook or heavy deck beam spanning the bow – it’s broken and partly slumped.
  • Along the nearer side you can see the frames/ribs projecting where the hull planking has rotted away.
  • The deck at the bow has completely fallen in and is buried under a mound of silt and debris, so any fittings that were on the deck (windlass, bits, etc.) are no longer visible or are deeply buried.
  • Off behind the bow there’s an upright post or mast/bitts remnant, with a diver and light above it giving a sense of scale.

Overall, the bow structure is still recognizable, but the upper works and deck have failed and the interior is largely filled in with sediment.
