Vessel History:

The Cyrenian was a wooden Schooner launched in 1879, reflecting the height of Schooner construction for cargo transport on the Great Lakes. Like many vessels of her time, she was likely employed in the lumber, grain, or coal trade. After 34 years of service, the Cyrenian sank in 1913. Although detailed records of her operational history and the exact circumstances of her loss are sparse, her wreck remains an accessible and historically significant site in Lake Huron.

Wreck Site Information:

  • Location: Lake Huron
  • State/Province: Ontario
  • Depth: 1 to 12 ft (0.3 to 3.66 m)
  • GPS Coordinates: N 44° 59.291′, W 081° 15.061′

Site Description:

The wreck is situated just off the public beach in Lion’s Head, Ontario. It lies in shallow water, making it a popular site for snorkeling and shore dives. The remains are composed of two disjointed sections:

• The bottom section and part of one side.

• The wreck’s proximity to the shore and shallow depth make it easily accessible to recreational divers and snorkelers.

• The site is a valuable resource for learning about Great Lakes schooners and offers an engaging underwater experience, particularly for less experienced divers.

NOTMARs & Advisories:

Due to the shallow depth of the wreck, the site is ideal for beginners and snorkelers but may also be affected by wave action or sediment movement, particularly after storms. Divers should take care to avoid disturbing the wreck further or interfering with local marine ecosystems.
