Vessel Type

The Ishpeming was a wooden Schooner, a vessel type known for its use in transporting bulk cargo such as lumber, coal, or grain across the Great Lakes during the 19th century. These sailing ships were a vital part of the region’s maritime economy.

Description

Launched in 1872, the Ishpeming was constructed for use as a cargo carrier on the Great Lakes. With a length of 140 ft, it was a medium-sized Schooner, well-suited for navigating the shallow waters and harbours of the region.

On October 23, 1903, the Ishpeming sank in Lake Huron, off the coast of Michigan, near Alcona County. The circumstances of its sinking are not fully detailed, but many schooners of the time met their end due to severe weather, collisions, or structural failure under heavy loads.

Final Dispositions

The wreck lies in 12 ft (3.7 m) of water, making it easily accessible for exploration. The remains consist mainly of the bottom of the ship, resting on the lakebed.

• The Keel is visible, along with the mast step, which once supported the Schooner’s tall masts.

• The opening for the Centerboard trunk can also be observed, offering insights into the vessel’s design and construction.
