Lynford E. Geer

Lynford E. Geer was a prominent figure in the early 20th-century shipbuilding industry in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. In 1902, he co-founded the Manitowoc Dry Dock Company alongside Elias Gunnell and Charles C. West. Geer served as the company’s secretary and treasurer, contributing significantly to its development and operations. 

The Manitowoc Dry Dock Company, established through the acquisition of the Burger and Burger shipyard, quickly evolved into a modern shipbuilding facility. Under the leadership of Gunnell, West, and Geer, the company expanded its capabilities, including the construction of steel-hulled vessels and the manufacturing of marine engines and boilers. This growth positioned the company as a key player in the Great Lakes shipbuilding industry. 

Geer’s role extended beyond administrative duties; he was instrumental in the company’s strategic acquisitions. In 1908, along with his partners, he facilitated the purchase of the Manitowoc Steam Boiler Works, enhancing the company’s ability to equip vessels with essential machinery. This acquisition was pivotal in enabling the company to build and fully outfit steel vessels, thereby broadening its service offerings. 

Throughout his tenure, Geer was involved in various aspects of the company’s operations, contributing to its reputation for quality and innovation in shipbuilding. His efforts, alongside those of his partners, laid the foundation for what would become The Manitowoc Company, Inc., a diversified industrial entity with a lasting impact on the maritime industry.
