John T. Graup was a shipowner based in Napanee, Ontario, in the late 19th century. In 1872, he acquired the schooner CHARM, a vessel built in 1859 by George Thurston in Kingston, Ontario. The CHARM was a wooden schooner with a square stern, initially measuring 76.8 feet in length and 17.2 feet in beam. After a rebuild in 1867, its length was extended to 90 feet. Under Graup’s ownership, the CHARM continued to operate on Lake Ontario until it foundered in a storm on November 5, 1874, near the northwest corner of Amherst Island. The vessel was carrying a cargo of barley from Napanee, Ontario, to Oswego, New York, at the time of its sinking.
