In its final years, the ARLINGTON was acquired by Burke Towing & Salvage Co., a company known for its diverse maritime operations, including freight transport, salvage, and towing. The freighter continued to operate as a bulk carrier, transporting essential goods like wheat. Despite its aging structure, the ARLINGTON remained a dependable vessel, reflecting the quality of its original construction and the maintenance efforts of its successive owners. Tragically, the ARLINGTON met its end on May 1, 1940, when it succumbed to a violent storm on Lake Superior. Its sinking marked the conclusion of a storied career that spanned nearly three decades and left a lasting legacy in Great Lakes maritime history.
