The Detroit River is one of the most historically significant waterways in North America, forming a major
shipping corridor and international border between Canada and the United States. For more than two centuries,
this river supported shipyards, steel mills, passenger steamers, ferries, industrial barge traffic, and
wartime logistics.
Strong currents, heavy commercial navigation, and limited recreational access make diving selective, but the
river contains numerous submerged structures, industrial remnants, and historically documented wrecks connected
to Detroit’s rise as a manufacturing powerhouse.
