The Northerner was an 81-foot, two-masted schooner built in 1851 at Clayton, New York by John Oades. It’s a small vessel that doesn’t get much attention in Great Lakes history archives, but its story is still a fascinating one.

In 1868, while loaded with cordwood on Lake Michigan, the schooner began pounding badly on the bottom and taking on water faster than was safe. The captain put in at Port Washington, Wisconsin, where the deck cargo was discharged to lighten the load. After that, the vessel was taken under tow toward Milwaukee for repairs, but it again began taking on water and sank en route. Thankfully, the entire crew was rescued.

Today, the Northerner is a popular dive site in the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary.

This new 3D model was created from 1,418 30-megapixel images shot by Andrew Goodman during the 2025 season.
