We’re excited to share that our recent release on the discovery of the H.B. Sketch has been picked up and published by Scuba News Canada!
The H.B. Sketch, a wooden schooner resting deep in the cold waters of Lake Ontario, is one of the most remarkable Great Lakes wreck finds in recent years. Discovered on July 8, 2016, by veteran explorers Tim Caza and Dennis Gerber, the site has been hailed for its extraordinary state of preservation.
Thanks to the cold, fresh water environment of Lake Ontario, the wreck remains upright and intact, offering divers and historians alike a rare window into 19th-century Great Lakes shipping.
Why This Matters
- The H.B. Sketch is a time capsule of Great Lakes maritime history.
- It adds to the growing catalog of shipwrecks in Lake Ontario that are not only historically significant but also remarkably well-preserved.
- Features like the schooner’s hull and rigging give divers an unparalleled opportunity to explore history firsthand.
A Growing Spotlight
With coverage in Scuba News Canada, the H.B. Sketch is reaching an even wider audience of divers, researchers, and maritime enthusiasts across the country. The story underscores both the importance of shipwreck preservation and the growing recognition of the Great Lakes as one of the world’s premier freshwater dive destinations.

We’ll continue to follow new documentation and survey work as it becomes available. In the meantime, we encourage readers to check out the full Scuba News Canada feature and dive deeper into the story of the H.B. Sketch.
