From Fire to 3D: Exploring the Louisville Shipwreck off Calumet
3DShipwrecks.org has just released its latest interactive model: the 1853 wooden screw steamer Louisville.

Built in Buffalo and lost by fire off Calumet, Illinois in 1857, the Louisville represents one of the earliest generations of screw-driven Great Lakes steamers. Today, her disarticulated wreck rests in 60 feet of water, where machinery features—including boiler, engine, prop shaft, and even anchor chain—remain visible.

The new 3D model allows divers, historians, and the public to explore the site virtually in incredible detail. From the upright boiler to the unique four-valve single expansion engine, this survey captures one of the Great Lakes’ most significant early steamship wrecks.
