The U.S. Seaway Project Overview
Led by Dan Gildea and Bob Sherwood, the U.S. Seaway Project is dedicated to the exploration, documentation, and public education of historic dive sites throughout Northern New York’s St. Lawrence River. This self-funded, volunteer-driven initiative collaborates with respected groups such as the St. Lawrence River Historical Society, the Clayton Diving Club, and NOAA to uncover and share the rich maritime heritage along the U.S. side of the river.
Historic and Geographic Context
The project focuses on the U.S. section of the St. Lawrence River, a region central to North American shipping and exploration since the 17th century. Known for its unique currents, diverse underwater ecosystems, and historic shipwrecks, this area has drawn both historians and divers alike. Daniel and Bob, each contributing extensive experience in diving and historical research, play key roles in unearthing lesser-known sites and enhancing access to popular dive spots like Alexandria Bay.
Community and Research Focus
The project values collaborative exploration, supporting volunteer divers and enthusiasts who assist in surveys, site maintenance, and documentation. It’s an initiative that enriches local understanding of historical artifacts, assists with preservation efforts, and provides divers with enhanced access to detailed information about shipwrecks and underwater heritage sites, embodying the spirit of collaborative and community-based research.
