J. & H. McLennan

J. & H. McLennan was a prominent Canadian shipping and transportation firm in the 19th century, founded by brothers John McLennanand Hugh McLennan. The company played a significant role in the development of maritime commerce along the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes.

John McLennan (1821–1893) and Hugh McLennan (1825–1899) were born in Lancaster, Upper Canada (now Ontario). They were sons of Scottish immigrant John McLennan, who settled in Glengarry County in 1802. The brothers ventured into the shipping industry, establishing J. & H. McLennan, which became influential in the transportation of goods, particularly coal, between Montreal and Kingston. Their operations supported the energy needs of gas companies and contributed to the economic growth of the region.

The company’s fleet included vessels like the Carrier, a wooden river barge built in 1862 in Montreal. The Carrier was utilized for transporting coal along the St. Lawrence River, highlighting the McLennans’ involvement in facilitating essential trade routes.

Beyond their business endeavors, the McLennan brothers were active in community affairs. Hugh McLennan, in particular, was known for his contributions to Montreal’s commercial and civic life. He served as president of the Montreal Board of Trade and was involved in various philanthropic activities.
