E. M. Harrington

Ownership Era: Late 1866 – 1879

Location: Cleveland, Bay City, and Alpena, Michigan

Overview:

E. M. Harrington, a prominent businessman, purchased the Philo S. Bemis in late 1866 and relocated its operations multiple times—from Cleveland to Bay City and eventually Alpena, Michigan. This reflected the dynamic nature of shipping operations in the Great Lakes, as businesses and vessels adapted to changing economic opportunities.

Significance:

Under Harrington’s ownership, the vessel became a key asset for towing and navigation in Michigan’s burgeoning lumber and shipping industries. Its eventual fire and sinking in 1872 near Alpena highlight the hazards steam-powered vessels faced, particularly with wooden hulls and combustible materials. Harrington’s efforts to salvage and rebuild the vessel after the fire demonstrate its economic value, though the tug was ultimately abandoned by 1879.
