ETHOS

As we continue to explore the fascinating world of wreck diving, we must take a moment to address some important matters concerning our beloved dive sites. At SHOTLINE DIVING, we have always been committed to responsible and respectful diving practices, and we want to emphasize the significance of preserving our wrecks and the surrounding environment.

First and foremost, we must remind all divers that anchoring on wrecks is not only uncool but also illegal in Ontario. Many of the wrecks we encounter, like the Tiller, hold historical value and are over 50 years old. Anchoring can cause irreparable damage to these delicate structures, jeopardizing their integrity and the rich history they represent. Instead, we encourage the use of shot lines when descending to wrecks in the Great Lakes. Shot lining allows for a safe and controlled descent while protecting the wrecks from unnecessary harm.

As diving enthusiasts, we all share the responsibility to preserve and respect these unique underwater time capsules. If you find yourself diving with an instructor who does not advocate shot lining wrecks, we urge you to request a full refund and seek proper training elsewhere. Responsible diving practices should always be at the forefront of our training and experiences.

Additionally, we understand that some moorings on your favorite dive sites may be missing or in need of maintenance. We kindly ask for your patience and understanding in this matter. The organizations responsible for these moorings often operate on limited resources and volunteer efforts. Their dedication ensures that future generations of divers can continue to explore these awe-inspiring sites. Remember that when those organizations do have access to boats, they often pay for it or relinquish valuable paying spots to serve the diving community.

Let’s come together as a community of responsible divers, respecting the wrecks and marine life we encounter in the Great Lakes. By adhering to shot lining practices and supporting the efforts of mooring maintenance organizations, we can make a positive impact on the preservation of our underwater heritage.

Happy and responsible diving!
