L. Stevens

L. Stevens was a shipbuilder based in Presque Isle, Ontario, active during the mid-19th century. In 1863, Stevens constructed the wooden schooner Centurion, a two-masted vessel measuring 79 feet in length, 19 feet in beam, and 7 feet in depth, with a gross tonnage of 105 tons after remeasurement in 1871. The Centurion was primarily used for cargo transport across Lake Ontario. Notably, in September 1874, the schooner encountered an incident near Amherst Island, resulting in the loss of 20,000 feet of lumber. Later that year, on December 25, 1874, the Centurion sank off False Duck Islands while carrying iron ore; fortunately, the crew survived after enduring six hours in an open boat before being rescued and brought to Kingston. Specific details about L. Stevens’ other shipbuilding projects or personal history are limited in available historical records.
