John Donald Graham

John Donald Graham, commonly known as J.D. Graham, was a prominent figure in St. Catharines, Ontario, during the 19th century. He was notably involved in the maritime industry, particularly in ship ownership and management.

Maritime Ventures

In 1866, J.D. Graham, along with other associates from St. Catharines, commissioned the construction of the Bessie Barwick, a wooden barkentine built by the renowned shipbuilder Louis Shickluna. The vessel measured 138.9 feet in length, with a beam of 26.2 feet and a depth of 10.8 feet. It had a gross tonnage of 296.09 and a net tonnage of 273.63. Primarily engaged in the grain trade, the Bessie Barwicktransported cargoes such as wheat across the Great Lakes.

Throughout its operational history, the Bessie Barwick underwent several repairs and ownership changes. By 1878, ownership had transferred to John C. Graham of St. Catharines. The vessel faced numerous challenges, including severe storms that led to significant damage. In October 1887, while en route from Port Arthur to Kingston, the Bessie Barwick encountered a storm and was eventually driven into the shallows of Pilot Harbor on Michipicoten Island, Lake Superior, where it foundered and was destroyed. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties among the crew.

Beyond his maritime endeavors, J.D. Graham was an active member of the St. Catharines community. He was involved in various local initiatives and contributed to the city’s development during a period of significant growth and industrialization.
