Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (TBNMS)
The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (TBNMS) is a protected area located in Lake Huron, off the coast of Alpena, Michigan, dedicated to preserving one of the nation’s most historically significant collections of shipwrecks. Managed by NOAA in partnership with the state of Michigan, the sanctuary spans 4,300 square miles and is home to over 100 well-preserved shipwrecks, representing the rich maritime heritage of the Great Lakes.
The sanctuary serves as a hub for maritime history, offering educational programs, research opportunities, and diving access to its shipwrecks. It is a popular destination for recreational divers and historians who wish to explore and study the well-preserved wrecks, some of which date back to the 19th century. TBNMS promotes the conservation of the Great Lakes’ underwater cultural resources while fostering a greater understanding of the region’s maritime history and environmental significance.
