The DOMINION, built in 1890 in Chatham, Ontario, was a wooden barge initially constructed as a propeller vessel. It had a dimension of 95 feet in length, 24 feet in beam, and 5 feet in depth. The vessel had a gross tonnage of 138 and a net tonnage of 94. It was owned by D. Flook of Chatham.
The engine of the DOMINION was manufactured by Dalgarno, Parkinson & Co., with specifications of 12×12. However, at some point, the vessel was converted into a barge. It is worth noting that no other names were associated with this particular vessel.
On an unfortunate day in March 1898, the DOMINION met its demise. The barge was wrecked by ice in Chatham, Ontario, and ultimately became a total loss. The incident occurred while the vessel was tied to a dock along the Thames River. Thankfully, no lives were lost in this event.
Following the loss, the DOMINION was rebuilt as a barge in 1898, still in Chatham. It is worth mentioning that this vessel might be the same one that ran aground at Michael’s Bay on Manitoulin Island in October 1895.
