The Rochester 5 wreck was another significant find by NOAA in 2022. Like the other wrecks located during this survey, Rochester 5 lies in the depths of Lake Ontario, near Rochester, New York. This wreck is presumed to be either a schooner or a small steamer, vessels that were commonly used for transporting goods and passengers across the Great Lakes during the 19th century.
The discovery of Rochester 5 offers a tantalizing glimpse into the past. Given the heavy maritime traffic in the area during the 1800s and early 1900s, this wreck could potentially be linked to a known historical event or it may represent a previously undocumented maritime disaster.
As with Rochester 4, further research, possibly including dives or remote-operated vehicle (ROV) surveys, could help to identify the wreck and provide more information about the circumstances surrounding its sinking.
