The ANDOVER was a schooner that was built in 1844 in Black River, Ohio. It had a length of 98 feet, a beam of 24 feet, and a depth of 9 feet. The vessel had a tonnage of 190.54 gross tons. Initially enrolled in Cleveland, Ohio, it was later enrolled in Oswego, New York.
The ANDOVER experienced several incidents during its lifetime. In May 1856, it suffered heavy damage when it went ashore on Hen & Chicks in Lake Erie. In October 1858, it lost its anchors and chains near Long Point after being struck by the steamer SWAN. The vessel ran for Buffalo, New York, following the incident.
On June 16, 1861, the ANDOVER was wrecked on Pte aux Barques Reef in Lake Huron. It had gone ashore and resisted all efforts, including those by the tug ZOUAVE, to release it. Eventually, the vessel was stripped and abandoned. It was carrying lumber at the time of the wreck.
The ANDOVER was owned by Elon W. Hudson of Detroit, Michigan. The master of the vessel was Captain Frawley. There is a possibility that the vessel was recovered in later years.
