On June 10, 1895, the steam yacht Gitana, owned by G.B. Sloan Jr. of Oswego, was reported lost on Lake Ontario. The last known sighting of the Gitana was near Stoney Island. Robert Sloan, the son of G.B. Sloan, and a party arrived at the harbor on a yacht the following day and expressed certainty that the Gitana had sunk off Stony Island.
According to Mr. Benoit, a fisherman who was out from Stony Island around 10 o’clock on Thursday morning, he saw the Gitana with waves washing over her. It appeared that the yacht was attempting to reach a harbor at the foot of Stony Island. This was the last sighting of the Gitana, and there was no doubt that the vessel had foundered.
It was also mentioned that John Sprague, a crew member aboard the Gitana, was the son of Delos Sprague from Henderson, New York. He left behind a wife and child in Oswego.
