IDENTIFICATION & SITE INFORMATION #
PROJECT DESCRIPTION #
In an effort to enhance the aquatic ecosystem of Lake Erie, specifically near Turkey Point, a project was undertaken to lay out approximately 1,500 tires on the lakebed. These tires were strategically placed to create an artificial habitat designed to support fish populations. The structured environment provided by the tires offers shelter, breeding grounds, and protection from predators for various fish species.
HISTORY #
Artificial reefs and habitats have been used globally as a means to support declining fish populations by providing environments where fish can thrive. The use of tires, while somewhat unconventional, has been implemented in various locations due to the availability of the material and its durability underwater. At Turkey Point, this project aimed to enhance the local fishery and contribute to the overall health of the Lake Erie ecosystem.
FINAL DISPOSITION #
The project was successfully completed with the deployment of 1,500 tires. The effectiveness of such artificial habitats is generally monitored over time to assess the impact on local fish populations and the broader ecosystem. The site at Turkey Point has become an integral part of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve fish habitats in Lake Erie.
NOTMARs & ADVISORIES #
There are no current Notices to Mariners (NOTMARs) in effect related to the artificial habitat at Turkey Point.
