History
The America was a scow-barge that was built in 1872 in East Saginaw, Michigan. It had a wooden hull and featured three masts. The vessel had an official number of 29763 and a tonnage of 124 tons.
In the fall of 1881, the America was driven ashore at Port Burwell, Ontario, on Lake Erie during a storm. The available information does not provide details regarding the specific circumstances of the loss, including any loss of life or cargo. By May of 1882, the America was reported as breaking up, with its stern having been carried away by the waves. In the 1884 Merchant Vessels listing, it is mentioned that the America was “lost or otherwise out of service.”
