The Miztec was a three-masted schooner built in 1890 in Marine City, Michigan. On May 15, 1921, she was carrying a cargo of salt while being towed by the steamer Zillah. Unfortunately, a sudden storm arose, and during the storm, the line connecting the Miztec to the steamer Zillah broke. As a result, the schooner vanished from sight.
The Miztec, along with her entire crew of seven, was lost in the storm. The vessel now rests on the bottom of Lake Michigan in waters ranging from 45 to 55 feet deep. The wreck of the Miztec serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers and risks faced by sailors and mariners on the Great Lakes during storms and adverse weather conditions. The tragic sinking of the Miztec is part of the rich maritime history of the Great Lakes, where many vessels have met similar fates over the years.
